•ABOUT MODEL VARIATIONS:

THE FOLLOWING CHART ONLY COVERS KONICA CAMERA MODELS SOLD WITHIN THE UNITED STATES, FOR KONICA, FIRST BY THE BERKEY MARKETING CORPORATION WHICH WAS THE U.S.A.'S ONLY DISTRIBUTOR UNTIL ABOUT 1984. AROUND THAT TIME KONICA OPENED THEIR OWN U.S. SALES AND FACTORY SERVICE AND DISTRIBUTION CENTER.

THEREFORE, IT MAY BE INTERESTING TO NOTE, THAT IN MANY CASES KONICA RE-LABELED AND RE-NAMED CERTAIN MODELS FOR SALE OUTSIDE OF THE U.S., AND/OR OUTSIDE OF THE KONICA RETAIL CHAIN ITSELF (WITHIN THE U.S.).

FOR INSTANCE, SOME OF THE EARLY "F" MOUNT CAMERAS WERE SOLD BY THE MONTGOMERY WARD, AND SEARS STORES UNDER THEIR OWN "STORE NAMES." ALSO, IN OTHER COUNTRIES CERTAIN MODELS WERE RE-LABELED TO EITHER ACCOMMODATE TRANSLATION TO THEIR LANGUAGE, OR TO AVOID CONFUSION WITH OTHER CAMERAS OF SIMILAR NAME OR DESIGNATION THAT WERE ALREADY ON THE MARKET IN THAT AREA.

FOR EXAMPLE, CAMERAS THAT WERE SOLD (HERE IN THE STATES) AS THE T-1 AND T-2, WERE SOLD IN JAPAN AS FT-A'S. AND OUR AUTO REFLEX WAS KNOWN AS THE AUTOREX OVER THERE. LIKEWISE, IN EUROPE, WHAT WE KNEW AS THE TC WAS SOLD AS THEIR Acom-1.

THEREFORE, WHEN YOU SEE AN FT-A, OR AN Acom-1, YOU KNOW THAT IT WAS NEVER SOLD (UNDER THAT NAME) IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT RATHER THAT IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT HERE FROM OVERSEAS.

ONE EXAMPLE OF A KONICA CAMERA MADE ONLY FOR THE U.S. MARKET WAS THE ANNIVERSARY MODEL OF THE (1973) T-3 - OF WHICH THERE WERE ONLY 1,5OO MADE. THIS T-3 WAS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR A MARKETING PROGRAM, AND IT WAS INTENDED THAT EACH U.S. KONICA DEALER (AT THE TIME) WOULD GET ONE. ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE BY THE BERKEY MARKETING COMPANY (THE IMPORTER OF KONICA AT THE TIME). IF YOU WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO PURCHASE ONE OF THESE CAMERAS, AND DEPENDING ON YOUR DEALER, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN SENT AN OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE FROM KONICA.

ALSO, REGARDING MODEL VARIATIONS:

WITHIN MOST MODEL CATEGORIES THERE ARE ALSO VARIATIONS OR SUB-CATEGORIES. FOR INSTANCE, THE KONICA "TC" MODEL HAS 4 VARIATIONS. MOST PEOPLE WILL NOT NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE BECAUSE THESE CHANGES USUALLY INVOLVE MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL IMPROVEMENTS. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES MINOR COSMETIC CHANGES WERE MADE ALSO.

IN THIS REGARD: THE FS-1 HAD 3 VARIATIONS, THE FC-1 HAD 2 VARIATIONS, AND THE FT-1 HAD 2 VARIATIONS. THESE WERE USUALLY MADE TO THE ELECTRONICS, AND WERE DONE TO CORRECT, PREVENT, OR IMPROVE SERVICE AND/OR OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS.

IN THE CASE OF THE FT-1, THE FIRST MODEL "A" (1983-1984) WAS VERY DEPENDABLE. BUT NEW TECHNOLOGY SIMPLIFIED THE CIRCUIT BOARDS, AND A CHANGE WAS MADE IN LATE 1984. AFTER THIS CHANGE, THE DESIGNATION FOR THIS MODEL CHANGED FROM "A" TO "M," OR "MC" - WHICH STOOD FOR "MICRO-COMPUTERIZED" MODEL.

IN THE CASE OF THE T-1 CHANGING TO T-2, THE A-1 CHANGING TO A-2, AND THE T-3 CHANGING TO NT-3; THE DESIGNATION CHANGES ARE NOT LABELED ON THE CAMERA ITSELF. SO, TO LOOK AT IT, YOU MIGHT JUST SAY THAT YOU HAVE A "T." BUT IT COULD ACTUALLY BE A T-1, OR T-2 DEPENDING ON THE LAYOUT OF SOME OF THE CONTROLS.

THE EASIEST WAY TO TELL WHICH MODEL YOU HAVE IS TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM. FOR EXAMPLE:

THE T-1 HAS THE "ON/OFF" SWITCH ON THE BACK OF THE CAMERA, AND THE T-2 HAS IT ON THE SHUTTER RELEASE MARKED WITH A RED DOT AND AN "L."

THE A-1 AND A-2 ARE HARDER TO TELL APART. MOST OF THE A-1'S HAVE 3 STRAIGHT BLADE SCREWS HOLDING THE BOTTOM PLATE ON, WHEREAS THE A-2'S HAVE PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS. TO BE SURE, IT IS BEST TO CHECK YOUR DATE STICKER IN THE CAMERA (REFER TO THE NEXT INFORMATION SECTION: "HOW CAN YOU TELL WHEN YOUR CAMERA WAS PRODUCED," AND THE CHART AND DATES BELOW).

THE BEST WAY TO TELL WHAT YOU HAVE ON THE T-3 IS TO SEE IF THE HOT SHOE IS REMOVABLE, IF IT HAS A 'POINTED' PRISM TOP (ABOVE THE WORD "KONICA"), AND IF THE SELF TIMER/DEPTH OF FIELD LEVER IS A SOLID COLOR (EITHER CHROME OR BLACK). THE DIFFERENCES ARE THAT THE NT-3 HAS A BUILT-IN HOT SHOE (NOT REMOVABLE), AND IT IS 'SQUARED-OFF' AT THE TOP OF THE TRIANGULAR PRISM (ABOVE THE WORD "KONICA"). ALSO, THE SELF TIMER/DEPTH OF FIELD LEVER IS BLACK, BUT IT HAS A WHITE STRIPE ON IT.

ANOTHER INTERESTING MODEL VARIATION EXAMPLE CAN BE SEEN IN THE DIFFERENT FOCUSING SCREENS. STARTING AT THE END OF THE T-2 RUN, A SPLIT FOCUS SCREEN WAS AVAILABLE. IT WAS LISTED AS AN OPTION ON THE T-3, BUT IN LATE 1975 A 3RD SCREEN WAS ADDED TO THE NT-3 WHICH WAS A SPLIT AND MICRO DIAPRISM COMBINATION WHICH WAS THE SAME CONFIGURATION AS THE TC TOFT-1 SCREENS.

KONICA DID PRODUCE A FEW FULL AND 1/2 FRAME SLR CAMERAS. THE AUTOREFLEX AND AUTOREFLEX - P ARE THE MOST COMMON. THEY ALSO SOLD (ON A LIMITED BASIS) SOME FT-1'S WITH THIS FEATURE - BUT THESE WERE BY SPECIAL ORDER ONLY.

OVER THE YEARS, MODEL VARIATIONS INCLUDING GOLD PLATING, CLEAR PLASTIC, OPERATIONAL MODELS, AND OTHER LIMITED PRODUCTION, OR SPECIALTY MODELS APPEARED.

•HOW CAN YOU TELL WHEN YOUR CAMERA WAS PRODUCED:

ON MOST OF KONICA'S MODELS A "SAKURA" SILVER, FOIL STICKER WAS ATTACHED SOMEWHERE ON THE CAMERA. THIS STICKER HAS A NUMBER AND A LETTER EMBOSSED ON IT. THE NUMBER REPRESENTS A YEAR, AND THE LETTER REPRESENTS A WEEK. (EVERY TWO WEEKS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THE LETTER WOULD CHANGE TO THE NEXT LETTER IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER. FOR EXAMPLE, THE FIRST TWO WEEKS IN JANUARY WERE REPRESENTED BY AN "A," THE SECOND TWO WEEKS WERE "B," AND SO ON THROUGHOUT THE YEAR).

NOTING ON THE CHART BELOW THAT KONICA "T-1'S" WERE MADE IN THE 1960'S, AND USING THIS METHOD, A KONICA "T-1" OWNER WHO NOTICES A "7 A" STAMPED ON HIS STICKER CAN ASSUME THAT HIS CAMERA WAS MADE IN 1967 (7), IN THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE YEAR (A).

IF THE OWNER CAN NOT FIND THIS STICKER ANYWHERE ON OR IN THEIR CAMERA, THE ONLY WAY TO FIND OUT WHEN IT WAS MADE IS TO HAVE A KNOWLEDGEABLE KONICA EXPERT DO AN INTERNAL CHECK TO LOOK FOR MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL CLUES TO WHEN IT WAS MADE.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT AS FAR AS SERIAL NUMBERS ARE CONCERNED, THE OWNER SHOULD NOT CONSIDER THEM A DEPENDABLE SOURCE REGARDING WHEN THEIR CAMERA WAS MADE. THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IN MANY CASES OVER THE YEARS KONICA STARTED OVER AT THE BEGINNING, RE-USING THE NUMBERS MORE THAN ONE TIME. THEREFORE, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT YOU COULD OWN TWO CAMERAS WITH THE SAME SERIAL NUMBER, BUT THAT WERE ACTUALLY BUILT IN TWO DIFFERENT YEARS.

AND FINALLY:
REMEMBER THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT YOUR CAMERA IN A CERTAIN YEAR (FOR EXAMPLE, 1987), THAT DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT YOUR CAMERA IS THAT YEAR'S (THE 1987) MODEL. YOU VERY WELL MAY HAVE BOUGHT (IN 1987) A CAMERA THAT WAS BUILT IN 1983, BUT THAT HAS BEEN IN A WAREHOUSE, OR IN THE DEALERS BACK ROOM FOR THE PREVIOUS FOUR YEARS. AS MENTIONED ABOVE, THE BEST WAY TO KNOW FOR SURE (WHEN A CAMERA WAS MADE) IS TO CHECK THE EMBOSSED NUMBER AND LETTER ON THE "SAKURA" STICKER INSIDE.

•DEPENDABILITY RATING:

THE "DEPENDABILITY RATING" AS SEEN IN THE "MODEL" COLUMN OF THE CHART BELOW (UNDER EACH MODEL TITLE), IS BASED ON A 1 TO 5 SCALE - WITH 1 BEING THE LEAST DEPENDABLE, AND 5 BEING THE MOST DEPENDABLE. THE RATING GIVEN IS NOT SCIENTIFIC, BUT RATHER, IS BASED ON MY OWN EXPERIENCES THROUGH THE THOUSANDS OF REPAIRS THAT I HAVE DONE OVER THE YEARS. THE RATING IS STRICTLY AN OPINION, BASED ON ONE MANS EXPERIENCES WITH THESE CAMERAS, AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN PERSONALLY.

•BATTERY CONVERSION:

PRIOR TO THE NEWER "F" SERIES (FT-1, FS-1, FC-1, FP-1) KONICA USED ONE OR TWO MERCURY CELLS THAT WERE 1.35 VOLT (U.S. EVERREADY MERCURY BATTERY NUMBERS EPX-625 AND EPX-675). SINCE THESE BATTERIES ARE NOW OUTLAWED IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, AND TO HAVE THE CAMERAS METER OPERATE AS IT SHOULD, A CONVERSION TO 1.5 VOLT BATTERIES IS NEEDED.

WHILE THERE ARE OTHER CHOICES FOR BATTERIES - SUCH AS WEIN CELLS, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM. IN MANY CASES THEY DO NOT FIT THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT VERY WELL, AND OFTEN THEIR SERVICE LIFE IS QUITE SHORT.

A DA675 (DURACELL #) 1.4 VOLT IS THE SAME SIZE AS THE KONICA EPX-675. IT IS A ZINC AIR HEARING AID BATTERY, AND IT IS CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE ORIGINAL VOLTAGE THAT YOUR METER SHOULD ONLY BE 1/2 TO 1 STOP OFF - WHICH IF YOU ARE USING PRINT FILM WOULD NOT BE TO NOTICEABLE. ALSO, SINCE THESE ARE ZINC AIR, THEIR SERVICE LIFE IS ABOUT THE SAME AS THE WEIN CELL'S, BUT WITHOUT THE HIGH COST. HOWEVER, IF YOU SHOOT SLIDES, THESE ARE NOT A GOOD CHOICE BECAUSE SLIDE FILM HAS ONLY 1/4 TO 1/2 STOP OF LATITUDE.

IN THE END, IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT IF YOU ARE USING BATTERIES OTHER THAN THE ONES MADE FOR YOUR CAMERA, (THE 1.35 VOLT OUTLAWED ONES), AND YOU HAVE NOT HAD THE CONVERSION DONE, YOUR METER WILL NOT BE ACCURATE. WHILE YOU CAN COMPENSATE FOR THIS IN THE MEAN TIME, IF YOUR CAMERA HAS NOT YET BEEN CONVERTED (PLEASE REFER TO THE "REPAIRS" PAGE OF THIS SITE) - THE FACT REMAINS THAT WITHOUT THE CONVERSION YOUR CAMERA WILL ALWAYS BE 1 TO 3 STOPS OFF FROM WHERE IT SHOULD BE. REFER TO THE CHART BELOW TO SEE IF THE CAMERA MODEL YOU HAVE IS ONE THAT REQUIRES THIS CONVERSION.

ALL CAMERAS SOLD BY ME HAVE BEEN CONVERTED (A SERVICE WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN CONSIDERED IN THE SALE PRICE).

•WARRANTY:

I WARRANTY MOST OF THE CAMERAS I SELL FOR 6 MONTHS. THIS COVERS ONLY THE WORK I HAVE PERFORMED. IT DOES NOT COVER ABUSE, MISUSE, MOISTURE DAMAGE, SAND OR DIRT DAMAGE, IMPROPER BATTERY USE, FLASH BACKFEED, OR IMPACT DAMAGE. NOR DOES THIS WARRANTY COVER ANY DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE CAMERA LEADING TO LOST INCOME, LOST FILM (OR PICTURES), OR ANY LOST PHOTO OPPORTUNITY. ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE WARRANTY SHOULD BE ASKED AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE.

•PRICE RANGES:

THE PRICE RANGES LISTED BELOW ARE GENERAL, AND THE RANGES LISTED EXCLUDE NEW OR RARE CAMERAS, AND/OR "POOR" CAMERAS OR CAMERAS SO BAD THAT THEY ARE ONLY SOLD FOR PARTS.

THEREFORE, THE PRICE RANGES LISTED FALL BETWEEN THESE TWO EXTREMES, AND THEY REPRESENT CAMERAS FROM "USER" TO "MINT" - USED CONDITION, THAT ARE ABLE TO PERFORM AS THEY WERE INTENDED TO. ALL HAVE BEEN EITHER SERVICED, OVERHAULED, AND/OR CHECKED FOR APPROVAL BY ME BEFORE BEING OFFERED FOR SALE.

WITH THIS INFORMATION IN MIND, THE MID-RANGE PRICES LISTED BELOW ARE TO BE USED ONLY TO GIVE THE VIEWER AN APPROXIMATE IDEA OF WHAT THE PURCHASE OF A GIVEN CAMERA (FROM ME) WOULD COST. THE PRICES LISTED ARE NOT TO BE TAKEN AS PRECISE FIGURES AS THEY ACCOUNT FOR CAMERAS SPANNING A "CONDITION" RATING THAT RANGES FROM "USER" CONDITION TO "MINT" CONDITION.

CONDITION AS DEFINED BY WEBER CAMERA:

A "
POOR" CAMERA IS JUST WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE - GOOD ONLY AS A PARTS SOURCE. THESE CAMERAS ARE NOT INCLUDED ON THIS CHART. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR MORE INFORMATION.

A
"USER" CONDITION CAMERA IS ONE THAT PERFORMS AS IT SHOULD, IN EVERY RESPECT, BUT SHOWS USE, AND IS COSMETICALLY ONLY FAIR. THESE CAMERAS ARE INCLUDED ON THIS CHART, AND WOULD BE FOUND AT THE LOW END OF THE PRICE RANGE LISTED.

A
"GOOD TO EXCELLENT" CAMERA IS ONE THAT WORKS AS IT SHOULD, SHOWS SOME - BUT NOT MUCH - USE, AND IS SHOWING VERY LITTLE WEAR COSMETICALLY. THESE CAMERAS ARE INCLUDED ON THIS CHART, AND WOULD BE FOUND IN THE MID RANGE OF THE PRICES GIVEN.

A
"MINT" CONDITION CAMERA IS ONE THAT WORKS, AND LOOKS LIKE NEW, AND SHOWS NO COSMETIC WEAR. THESE CAMERAS ARE INCLUDED ON THIS CHART, AND SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO BE PRICED AT THE TOP END OF THE PRICE RANGES GIVEN.

AND "NEW" OR "RARE" CAMERAS ARE NOTHING LESS THAN NEW OR RARE. WHILE NOT INCLUDED ON THIS CHART, I DO GET THEM IN FROM TIME TO TIME, SO PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR MORE INFORMATION REGARDING AVAILABILITY OF WHAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN.
